Mahama to be dragged to Supreme Court over bid to contest 2020 polls

Mahama to be dragged to Supreme Court over bid to contest 2020 polls

- A deputy minister says he is committed to suing former president Mahama for attempting to contest the 2020 elections

- Eugene Boakye Antwi believes the former president has no legal right to seek re-election

Just moments after John Mahama declared his intentions to run again for office, a member of parliament under the NPP has threatened to sue the president in a court of law.

Eugene Boakye Antwi, who is a key member of the NPP has indicated his plan to drag Mahama to the Supreme Court over his presidential ambitions in 2020.

The suit according to him will seek an interpretation on the eligibility of the former president to contest for the presidency in the 2020 elections.

Boakye Antwi who also doubles as the Deputy Minister for Works and Housing said having been president, retired and enjoying all benefits due to a former president, it will be legally wrong for Mahama to contest.

Contrary to this move, the NPP had indicated that Mahama's decision to be flagbearer of the NDC ahead of the 2020 elections is no bother to the NPP.

The newly elected communications director of the NPP, Yaw Adomako Barfi, has revealed that the party has committed itself to fulfill all its campaign promises.

Mahama's comeback in 2020, according to him, is no threat to the party and that the former president is no match to his main rival, President Akufo-Addo.

"...Ghanaians are the best judges so we are not worried. After all they have a lot of arsenal on them, Alban Bagbin has said Mahama’s coming is a bomb, looking at what Goosie Tanoh has said, looking at what Ken Dzirasah has said. I’m assuring Ghanaians that we are not disturbed at all and we are not even going to be disturbed because we have the mandate, and we need to deliver on the promises,” Yaw Adomako Barfi stated

Already, all ten regional party chairmen of the NDC have endorsed Mahama and also advised him to lead the party. In a draft letter, all chairmen signed in approval of John Mahama being the next flag bearer of the NDC yet again.

But things have not been easy for the former president as other party executives including those he worked closely with during his tenure as president are now set to contest against him.

One of the most vociferous amongst all is the second deputy speaker of parliament, Alban Bagbin, who has been singled out for the use of harsh words against John Mahama.

In his latest string of attack, Alban Bagbin, attributed the defeat of the NDC during the 2020 election to the decision by former President Mahama to appoint a visually impaired official.

The member of parliament for Nadowli Kaleo has argued that appointing Dr. Henry Siedu Daanaa as the minister in charge of chieftaincy and traditional affairs was a terrible mistake that cost the party dearly in the 2016 elections.

“In our tradition, if you are not whole can you be a chief or grandmother? So if you form a government and make the minister of Chieftaincy a blind person and the chiefs are objecting and you don’t change him what are you telling the chiefs?,” he suggested during an address to some party communicators in the Volta Region,

The revelation by Alban Bagbin forms part of a series of other criticisms against John Mahama especially as he prepares to contest 2020 elections.

Already, there are plans by the top executives of the NDC to summon Alban Bagbin to the disciplinary committee over some of the criticisms he has been vicious and offensive.

Mr. Bagbin had earlier described the Mahama’s administration as an “animal farm” government which did not bode well for hard working party members.
