Holy Child College of Education is a college of learning dedicated to training women as qualified teachers. Its establishment was motivated from the passion to see a method of education that is based on trust and at the same time reveres the dignity of every human being. This passion which has been maintained over the years is said to be one of the focal reasons why the institution of learning is distinguished from others. At the moment, the college runs a three year post-secondary school course and other general courses that are targeted at preparing those who are passionate about teaching for both primary and junior secondary schools.

Basically, in Holy Child College of Education, there are six academic departments as mentioned on the college's official website which are Languages, Mathematics and ICT, Science, Vocational Skills, Social Science and the Education department. There are other non-academic departments like the Quality Assurance Unit, Guidance & Counselling Unit as well. Also in the College, are a number of facilities which include a bank, halls of residence, print/design shops, computer and science laboratories, a resource center, and an Early Childhood Centre (SABRE Trust), among others. These are part of the effort made to give the students the required convenience in their learning process.

The Holy Child College of Education is known for their hard work in producing qualified teachers. Amazingly, the National Best Teacher award for the year 2017 was given to an alumna of the College, Ms Faustina Coppson.

About the Holy Child College of Education

The establishment of the Holy Child College of Education can be traced to 1846 when, in England, the founder of the Society of the Holy Child Jesus, Venerable Cornelia Connelly, felt the urgent need for the education of girls. After setting up her first ever convent in Derby, the visionary went on to establish other schools where children were fully taught in each of the classes.

Moreover, as explained on the college's official website, after their coming in to Africa in 1930, the Sisters of the Holy Child Jesus successfully established schools in the then Eastern Nigeria. Eventually, the first three pioneers, Rev. Mother Joachim Forster, Rev. Mother Cyril Smith and Rev. Mother St. Edward Charlton, landed in Takoradi on February 20th 1946. By 5th March, 1946, the College and School were started in Cape Coast with 120 students initially admitted. Out the 120 students, 70 of them were for the training college while the remaining 50 students were for the school. Then, by 1955, the training college moved to Takoradi where it continues to operate till date.

As a public college of education, the college is accredited under the National Accreditation Board (NAB), Ghana. The Holy Child College of Education has a vision to become a pace-setting college that trains knowledgeable and dedicated teachers, and a mission to become a centre of excellence with the relevant environment and learning materials so that the teacher trainees can become competent enough to carry out their functions professionally wherever they find themselves.

Since it was founded, the Holy Child College of Education has been headed by ten principals. While four of them are expatriates, the other six are Ghanaians. The College is headed presently by Mrs. Margaret Lemaire who assumed the office in 2009.

Holy Child College of Education courses

Since the beginning of 1960, according to the college, they have run a number of courses for their students with each of them lasting for a number of years. For instance, in the same year 1960, the college ran two years programme which was called Post-Middle Certificate 'B.' Another four years course was introduced in 1963 which was also known as Home Science Bias Course. Then, by 1969, another two-year programme was introduced known as Specialist Course for Certificate 'A'.

Other courses that have been run at Holy Child College of Education include;

  • Vocational/Specialist Course;
  • Post-Secondary Certificate 'A';
  • Modular Course for Untrained Teachers;
  • Diploma in Basic Education (Sandwich).

Each of these programmes was two-year courses. The only other programme that ran for four years was Diploma in Basic Education for Untrained Teachers (UTDBE) which was introduced in 2006.

Presently, based on the information contained on the College’s official website, there are two options as touching the courses offered in Holy Child College of Education which prospective students can choose from. Under the Basic Education programme, there are two diploma courses in operation that run for three years each, and another two courses under the post diploma programme that also run for two years each. The breakdown of the programmes are explained below:

Diploma programme in Basic Education

Under this programme, there are two options that prospective students can choose from. They are the General programme and the Early Child Education programme. While the General programme was introduced to the College in 2004, the Early Child Education programme was introduced in 2008. Depending on the course a student is applying for, he or she either gets a diploma certificate in Basic Education (general) or a diploma certificate in Basic Education (early child education) at the end of the training programme.

Post Diploma in Basic Education

This programme was introduced to the College in 2012 with the expectation of it running for two years. Then, in 2016, it was split into two courses which are Evening Classes for Diploma/B.Ed in Basic Education and Early Childhood Education, and Untrained Teachers Diploma in Early Childhood Education.

Fees at Holy Child College of Education

Among all the public colleges of education that are based in Ghana, the fees of Holy Child College of Education is among the relatively cheap and affordable colleges. While the information about the tuition fees for the new academic session is not displayed on the College’s official website yet, the tuition fee for 2017/2018 academic session can give an idea as to what the tuition for the new academic year can be like. In the 2017/2018 academic session, level 100 students paid GHC 1,500 as admission fee for the year, GHC 200 for SRC, GHC 100 as hall dues, and GHC 360 as UCC examination fee for each semester; while level 200 students paid GHC 1,164 which included SRC, hall dues, and exam fee. Then level 300 students paid GHC 788 for the year which also included SRC, hall project, and their examination fee.

General programme admission requirements

Prospective applicants who wish to apply with their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) result are expected to have passes in six (6) subjects which will include English language and Core Mathematics. Out of these subjects, they are to have three (3) elective subjects that are relevant to the course they want to study. On a minimal level, three (3) subjects out of the six (6) are expected to be C6, and they must also be relevant to the general programme option.

But for prospective applicants who want to apply with their Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSSCE) result, they are expected to have passes between A and D in not less than six (6) subjects which must include English Language and Core Mathematics. Three (3) subjects out of the six (6) have to be relevant to the general programme option.

Prospective applicants who wish to apply to the Holy Child College of Education are to make payment into Colleges of Education Ghana account at any branch of GCB Bank Ltd or UniBank Ghana Ltd.   • Fill the application form and ensure all required details are supplied.
  • Attach a passport picture in JPG or JPEG format which should not exceed 40KB in size.
