Ativor, Yammin rejected; Coker retained at NDC regional elections

- Joseph Kobina Ade Coker polled 319 votes on Saturday to retain his position as Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Greater Accra Region

- In the Volta Region, former transport minister, Dzifa Aku Attivor could not bring her aspiration to pass as she was beaten

Joseph Ade Coker was one of the big winners during the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) regional elections held on Saturday, September 1, 2018.

Mr. Coker was retained as the party’s Greater Accra Regional chairman after beating off competition from Daniel Amartey and former Adentan Member of Parliament, Emmanuel Ashie Moore.

Upon winning, he assured the delegates and party supporters that he will do his best to ensure that the opposition NDC returns to power in 2020.

"God has shown favour to me... with Christ in our vessel, I'm most grateful to everybody, I'm most grateful to all those who have believed in me...I'll ensure that the NDC comes to power in the year 2020," Mr. Coker said in his victory speech.

Meanwhile, there were shocking losses in the race for the chairmanship of other regions, as former Deputy Ashanti Regional Minister, Joseph Yammin, and former Minister of Transport, Aku Dzifa Ativor, all ended up of the losing side.

Mr. Yamin lost his chair bid to Andrew Nana Kwasi, a businessman and former Ashanti Regional Vice Chairman of the party, who managed to garner 668, 26 more than his popular competitor.

Reports suggest the former deputy Sports Minister stormed the venue with macho men in Black Hawk-branded t-shirts, creating confusion during the voting process.

Dzifa Ativor also failed to usurp incumbent Volta Regional Chair, John Kwadwo Gyapong, after garnering just 374 votes to the latter’s 491.

In the Eastern Region, former Ghana Ambassador to Algeria, Kwadwo Nyamekye-Marfo was elected unopposed as the Regional Chairman of the NDC.

In all, about 925 delegates took part in the NDC’s regional elections held on Saturday at the Sunyani Jubilee Park.

The Chief of Tugu-Yapala in the Dagbon Traditional Area, Alhaji Ibrahim Mobila, emerged the newly elected Northern Regional Chairman of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC).

At the just ended regional elections, the 80-year-old commercial farmer beat his main contender, Godfred A. Wumbei, the outgoing regional organizer by 96 votes.
