- Two Malaysian women have been convicted for attempting to have lesbian sex in a car

- For their punishment the women were caned in a religious court in Malaysia

Two women caught practicing lesbianism in Malaysia have been whipped as punishment for what is considered an “ungodly” act in the Asian country.

The two women, recognised as Muslims, were arraigned before a religious court after being caught attempting to have sex in a car.

The BBC reports that the women, aged 22 and 32, were each caned six times in the Sharia High Court in the state of Terengganu.

The punishment meted out to them was the first public caning incident ever witnessed in the country.

An official also confirmed that this is the state's first conviction for persons caught engaging in homosexuality or lesbianism.

Same-sex relations are abhorred in Malaysia and considered illegal under both secular and religious laws.

Malaysian outlet The Star reports that the caning of the two lesbian women was witnessed by more than 100 people.

The incident has, however, sparked outrage from human rights activists who believe such a punishment must be abolished.

The Malaysian rights group Women's Aid Organisation said it was "appalled by this grave violation of human rights".

Meanwhile, the state holds that the punishment meted out is meant to serve as deterrent to the public in order for them not to engage in similar acts.

Satiful Bahri Mamat, a member of the Terengganu state executive council, told Reuters that such punishments are not intended to "torture or injure", but rather to "serve as a lesson to society”.

The two lesbian women were arrested in April by Islamic enforcement officers and were subsequently sentenced to be caned and fined RM3,300 ($800, £619) after pleading guilty.
