Most people in Ghana and Africa as a whole, depend on agricultural produce for food and survival. Unfortunately, more often than not, the agricultural produce is not enough to satisfy the primary needs of the population. Governments often reacted to this deficit by importing more agricultural products from outside the borders of the country. If you look keenly into this issue, you are likely to note that farmers are not informed on the more productive methods of farming. They often use old and less productive methods, which waste time and often result in poor yields. It would be helpful to develop agricultural institutions of higher learning to disseminate agricultural knowledge through trained extension officers to farmers.

History of Kwadaso Agricultural College

Kwadaso Agricultural College was established at Kumasi in 1922 to offer education on cocoa production to school dropouts. Fry and Cadbury, who were the main buyers of cocoa in the then Gold Coast region, provided construction facilities for the college. Due to increased demand for food, the college expanded to admit and train secondary school leavers in general agricultural practices. In 1952, the college was moved from Cadbury hall to its present location by the Ministry of Agriculture to become the current Kwadaso Agricultural College. The college developed over time and continued to offer a certificate in general agriculture to GCE/SSCE holders. In 1996, the program was reviewed to give room to train students in the overall agriculture. In September 1999, a Diploma in Agricultural Extension was introduced to supplement the certificate in General Agriculture.
