Manchester United boss has told his team they must think like Roger Federer if they want to get maximum points when they play Young Boys in the Champions League.

United will play the Switzerland based side in Wednesday Champions League cracker on a plastic pitch in Swiss capital Bern.

The Portuguese manager has told his side they must learn to adapt on the artificial turf just like eight-time tennis champion Federer does on different surfaces.

Mourinho said: “I don't want to use that before the match as a possible excuse for a not very good performance.

“We are in Switzerland, the home of one of the best ever tennis players, and I'm pretty sure that the big man sometimes is not happy to play on such a surface - but he has to play and has to win.

“He has a favourite surface but he has to win on the surfaces he is not in love with. We have to do it.”

However, the 55-year-old manager admitted he raised concerns about the pitch at a pre-Champions League meeting in Geneva during the international break.

And that is why he left team captain Antonio Valencia back home because he does not want to risk his knee on the surface.

United goalkeeper David De Gea said: “We are not used to playing on artificial grass so it's going to be a bit different.

"But we will try to play our football here.”

The Red Devils have trained at the Stade de Suisse which is unusual with the Manchester side as they conduct their practice at Carrington a day before traveling to face an away side.

Young Boys boss Gerardo Seoane added: “We can’t change the pitch.

“It’s clear they are not used to pitches like this, so in the beginning I guess it will be a special feeling.

“But with training and the warm-up, I think they will be alright.

“They have the quality, speed and technique to play on this pitch, so I don’t think it’s going to be a problem.”

Meanwhile, NAIJ.com had earlier reported that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho failed in a summer bid to land Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci.

The 55-year-old boss put the Italian on his wishlist of centre-backs to bolster his defence during the summer.
