- Police officials have arrested 23 armed robbers in the Eastern Region
- They were apprehended after an exchange of gunfire with their leader, Brama Salifu, aged 70
- Various items were seized from them after the arrest
Police officers at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region, have arrested 22 armed robbers led by a 70-year-old-man, Brama Salifu.
YEN.com.gh understands that various items such as 32 bags of Indian Hemp and guns were retrieved from the suspects.
According to a report by MyNewsGH.com, the suspects were rounded up after police officers exchanged gunfire with Salifu, the ringleader.
Salifu was however shot by the police in his right hand, and subsequently overpowered.
He was then rushed to the Kwahu Government Hospital at Atibie for treatment under guard.
The Eastern Regional Police Public Relations Officer DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, revealed that the swoop occurred on Wednesday, September 19, 2019 at around 11:20am.
The suspects were accosted by the police in their hideout at Anyiresu, a village over the bank of the Afram lake.
They are alleged to be among those behind the recent robbery attacks within the Kwahu enclave.
A search conducted at their hideout by the police revealed they had thirty-two sacks of dried leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp, ten SB short guns, four locally manufactured pistols, fifteen live BB cartridges, two chainsaw machines, ten empty BB cartridges and two boxes of assorted restricted drugs were retrieved.
The names of the 22 alleged armed robbers are Yakubu, 34, Sulley Issah, 34, Kwadwo Ekeham 18, Agbematu Francis 47, Hilali Dari, 30, Dodzi Efiavor, 25 and Mawutor Agbala, 28.
Others are Kofi Musah, 23, Mohammed Atuyie, 39, Osman Sumana, 28, Bone Sylvester, 34, Richard Gamor, 28, Haruna Kodo, 23, Issah Joseph, 26 and Mukalia Alhassan, 20.
The rest are Lumor Apator, 29, Fatawu Adams, 28, Kwagise Tsotovor, 48, Efia Agbale, 48, Dodzi Akpatsu 25, Sanka Abdul, 30 and Bertha Tetteh, 35.
