- A group of Muslim youth have reportedly attacked a mosque at Darkuman
- According to them, someone had verbally assaulted the Chief Imam
- Six people have been injured and are seeking treatment
YEN.com.gh is in possession of a photo which shows a group of people alleged to be Muslims who attacked a mosque at Darkuman, in Accra.
According to an eye witness, Ibrahim Abass, the youth stormed the mosque after prayers Friday evening, and claimed that some people there had maligned the Chief Imam.
Six people are reported to have been injured in the fracas and are receiving treatment at various health centres.
Mobile phones and other items were allegedly taken by the suspects.
Abass claimed they chanted “we are the defendants of the National Chief Imam and we will kill people who are insulting Chief Imam. We will kill you and there will be no police to defend you.”
The spokesperson for the Chief Imam, Sheikh Aremeyaw, however said he is not aware of the supposed insult or the attack at the mosque.
Whoever the thugs were, he noted, were not acting on the orders of the Chief Imam.
“Issues like these when they happen, cause disturbance because he does not want to be the centre of conflict,” the cleric noted.
He stressed that if even indeed uncomplimentary comments were made about the Chief Imam, he will not order the youth to get vengeance on his behalf.
“The Chief Imam is a very forgiving type who has a very peaceful disposition,” he added.
Sheikh Aremeyaw then called on the police and other investigative bodies to take up the issue and apprehend the culprits, because the Chief Imam will not be associated with such behaviour.
