- 5 NDC flagbearer hopefuls, have held a meeting with the objective of ensuring that John Mahama is not selected as NDC's flagbearer
- The five are Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, Goosie Tanoh, Sylvester Mensah, Alban Bagbin and Kweku Ricketts-Hagan
- Two others, Stephen Atubiga and Professor Joshua Alabi, were however not present
YEN.com.gh is in possession of a photo of five men alleged to have plotted to ensure that John Mahama is not selected as the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The five, all of whom have expressed interest in leading the NDC in the 2020 elections are Dr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah, Goosie Tanoh, Sylvester Mensah, Alban Bagbin and Kweku Ricketts-Hagan.
According to a report by MyNewsGH.com, the five men have expressed their willingness to present one of them to lead the NDC if need be.
YEN.com.gh understands that two other NDC members, Stephen Atubiga and Professor Joshua Alabi were not present at the meeting.
The reason for Atubiga’s absence remains unclear, but Professor Alabi is reported to have said he is not interested in the deal.
According to him, “…I am very confident I’ll win the slot without any difficulty. The competition will bring out the best and the people will determine who’s the best, and I know the people will take me as the best, and I’ll be ruling for eight years.”
The decision of the five presidential hopefuls follows advice given by popular journalist and pollster, Ben Ephson.
He is reported to have stated that “there are five (at the time) of them maybe they can decide that let’s form a ticket that one will contest and one will be running mate.
The more candidates they have, the more advantageous it is for Mahama. They can get talking to see if they can join forces to beat Mahama.”
John Mahama led the party in 2016 elections which saw them losing power to the NPP and president Akufo-Addo in an unprecedented defeat for a sitting president.
He has since launched his comeback campaign with full steam, starting from Cape Coast with his home region of Northern Region next on his radar.
