Meet Sophia Suleiman, the young midwife who delivered a baby on a moving bus (Photos)

Last week, YEN.com.gh reported that a young midwife had helped a woman in labour deliver her baby safely while on board a commercial bus.

In the report, it was indicated that the midwife was a passenger on a Bolgatanga bound. Midway through their journey after a pregnant co-passenger went into labour.

The midwife, identified as Sophia Suleiman, sprang into action and with the help of others on board, the baby was safely delivered at about 3:34 am.

After the delivery, the newly-born baby and her mother were reportedly handed over to the husband who is said to have taken them to the West Hospital in Tamale for further care.

While the report has made the beautiful Sophia Suleiman an internet sensation, not much is known about her except the fact that she is a young midwife.

Well, YEN.com.gh caught up with Sophia Safia Sulemana and she gave us a few details about herself.

According to Sophia Suleiman, she completed her senior high school (SHS) education at Bolgatanga Girls SHS in 2008.

After SHS, she enrolled in the Community Health Nursing Training School in Tamale in the Northern Region where she completed in 2012.

Sophia worked for two years as a community health nurse before proceeding to the Tumu Midwifery Training School in the Upper West Region.

She completed in 2017 and is currently working at Kunkwa Health Centre in the Maprugu District of the Northern Region.

Touching on the delivery itself, Sophia explained that they were only about 15 minutes into the journey when she realised that the pregnant lady was in the second stage of labour and thus rushed to her side

Having no gloves or instruments, Sophia had to improvise and had others on board tie polythene bags around her hands to receive the baby.

She even had to use a string to tie the umbilical cord and a blade she took from another passenger to cut it all on the moving bus.

When YEN.com.gh asked her how her family and friends are adjusting to her new found fame, she answered: "they were excited and couldn't believe I did that without gloves and delivery instruments but apart from that, everything is normal."

From the tone of her conversation with us, Sophia really does come across as a modest person who will not hesitate to help a fellow in need.
