As earlier reported by YEN.com.gh US First Lady, Melania Trump, has arrived in Ghana as part of her extended solo international mission to Ghana.
Mrs Trump was met on arrival by Ghana’s First Lady, Rebecca Akufo-Addo.
As part of her tour, Mrs Trump has visited the Greater Accra Regional Hospital, popularly known as Ridge Hospital.
At the Ridge Hospital, the US First Lady donated a phototherapy machine.
The machine is said to be used in the treatment of neonatal jaundice in babies.
Neonatal jaundice is a common condition in newborn babies, affecting about 50% of term and 80% of preterm babies researchers have said
For such babies, phototherapy is used in their treatment to prevent any acute or chronic brain damage.
Speaking after the donation, Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr Emmanuel Srofenyo was elated by the gesture.
“This particular equipment is one of the best in the market and so we are very excited that it has been donated.
“This one is going to add to the number of phototherapy equipment that we have which is going to go a long way in saving the lives of babies who develop that complication of jaundice during the neonatal period,” Dr Srofenyo told Joy News.
Apart from the phototherapy machine, Mrs Trump also donated hampers and gifts to mothers and children at the Child Welfare Clinic of the Hospital.
Mrs Trump who will spend two days in Ghana and she is expected to visit Cape Coast on the second leg of her tour.
From Ghana she is expected to leave for Malawi, Kenya and Egypt to also promote her “Be Best” child welfare initiative.
The “Be Best” initiative was launched earlier this year to focus on overall child well-being, with an emphasis on opioid addiction and online behaviour.
