Known as the four types of temperaments, we have been made to understand that every individual falls into, at least, one of these categories. This discovery explains why people react to situations in different ways, among other characteristics. It also helps to understand the major reasons why people act the way they do. Consequently, an understanding of each of them helps everyone to know why people act the way they do. Then, it helps them to treat people in a more matured way. These categories are sanguine, choleric, phlegmatic and melancholic. Therefore, let us consider each of this human temperament traits in detail.

1. Sanguine

One of the things that characterise sanguines is that they tend to be very optimistic about situations and events. They are very active and maintain a positive attitude at all time. When they work in any environment, they have their way of motivating people to action. They don't feel comfortable being in dull environments at all. This is why they make all effort to liven the place. Because of their extroverted character, they love partying so well. More so, they can be very good at entertaining people and they often get amused easily. You will easily fall in love with them when they come around you. They don't find it difficult making new friends and they can be so good at building relationships. When they talk, you see them smiling. In fact, if you are around them, you just have to be a good listener because they find it so easy to talk.

However, because of their extroverted trait, you will hardly see them being committed to things. As a result of this, they may not be too good at relying upon. Because they love fun, they can get easily distracted. Academically, they may not perform so well because it can be so boring to them.

2. Phlegmatic

People who have phlegmatic trait tend to be a people person. They are easy-going and do everything to ensure that there is peace. You will hardly see them being confrontational and when there is an issue, they are always quick to apologise. They do this to make sure that the atmosphere remains calm and peaceful. Whatever relationship they go into, they are always loyal and as parents, they are loving. Any relationship they start, whether with friends, family members or neighbours, they maintain it.

When people with this character trait are given an assignment or task to carry out, they need to be pressurised so as to deliver the job. This is because they don't like to engage themselves in anything that will stress them or put them under tension. Another bad side of them is that they tend to compromise easily. While they don't like change, if there is the need for it, it takes them some time before they eventually adjust to the change, especially when it is sudden. People who have this personality temperament are very practical and they are good at thinking strategically. When it comes to being patient, they can do that very well.

3. Melancholy

An amazing thing about people with this character trait is that they always want to do things in the right way. Related to that also is the fact that they want things to be done right. They don't compromise quality. They believe in order. People with melancholy traits are very cautious and they adhere to any existing rules. When things go wrong, they can be very aggressive just to make sure that they restore peace and everything gets back into shape. They don't do things haphazardly; they work with a plan and so, they usually maintain focus. When they communicate, they like to do so with facts. In order words, they don't talk off-point.

Moreover, melancholic people are analytical and they are logical. Because of these character traits, they tend to be very careful when it comes to taking risks. They also want to be sure of their analysis before they make any decision because of their fear of failing. If they are privileged to work as managers, they will perform excellently well. Another interesting thing about them is that they love their families and their friends. Because of this, they are not likely to marry any foreigner or even leave their homeland because of their love for their fatherland. If they have the opportunity to contribute to the growth of their community, they find joy in doing that.

4. Choleric

Think about visionaries and think about Cholerics. In fact, another name you can call them is walking ideas. This is because you cannot see them run of ideas or plans that are very practical. They are a goal-oriented set of people. Cholerics can be very practical and even straightforward. They don't know how to mince words. Rather than keep a company of shallow people, they prefer to walk or operate alone. Most time, they prefer to spend time with those that are of their status or those who share similar interests with them. Very important is the fact that they think big and make effort to occupy positions of authority.

Their bad side is that they can be domineering. Cholerics want to take the first place and be in charge. They find it easy to make decisions, not for themselves alone but for others as well. Most of the time, they don't leave room for negotiation, and if they ever do at all, it is usually very minimal. People with this personality temperament want things done in their way or nothing is done. What others say about them or how much pressure others mount on them do not really matter, they are motivated by the result they are after. They are very careful when it comes to building relationships. They do well in fields like technology, statistics, and programming.

However, based on all that been discussed about these temperament types, it is needful to bear in mind that an individual can have a blend of two or three of these personality temperaments. This means that a person can be Choleric-Sanguine, Sanguine-Choleric, Choleric-Phlegmatic or Choleric-Melancholy. Also, Sanguine-Phlegmatic, Phlegmatic-Choleric, Phlegmatic-Sanguine, and even a blend of Melancholy-Phlegmatic-Choleric, and so on. Irrespective of the temperaments someone combines, the most important this is that there is always one which is dominant.

Most of the time, people have more than one temperament. In fact, the experts say that everyone has all four temperaments but only one or two really stand out. Depending on what stands out for you, you could have a blend of the good and the bad sides of two or three of them.
