Method 1

1. Practising vocal and breathing exercises

This method focuses on ways to keep your voice healthy and in optimum condition.

1. Make sure to drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. The membranes which produce the sound function best when hydrated.

2. Whenever your throat feels itchy, stay silent and rest your voice.

3. When having a cold, try not to sing. Drink some tea and be quiet instead.

4. Quit smoking; don't smoke at all. Smoke damages your lungs and throat.

5. There are also some foods that might affect your voice. They are spicy foods, coffee, alcohol, milk products, and nuts.

How to train your voice to sing higher

1. Warm up – exercise

Your voice is like a muscle. Stretch it before and after use. The more you use it correctly, the more flexible it will become over time.

2. Facial relaxation

  • Place both of your trigger fingers over your chin, with your thumbs placed on the fleshy part under your chin. Softly massage this area to loosen up the muscles.
  • Open your mouth and eyes as far as you can, then scrunch your face up as much as possible – do this a few times over.
  • Make a wide yawn. This is great for stretching your face and jaw.
  • Give your neck and shoulders a good stretch.

3. Breathe

Place your hand directly above your stomach (your diaphragm) and practise taking big deep breaths while staying in a relaxed standing position.

Remember you do not need to raise your shoulders to take a deep breath. Do not take a breath from the top of your chest. Pull the breath in from your stomach.

Take a few large breaths and feel your diaphragm expand.

Now slowly release the breath on a “ssssss” sound. Try to do this without having any breaks in the breath. Release a slow, clean, constant ssssss until you no longer have enough breath to make a sound.

4. Sing higher notes effortlessly in your vocal warm-up

Start by humming a “mmmmm” sound. Be aware of where you are making the sound resonate in your head. A clean full sound should be projected forward and should resonate in your sinuses around your nose and forehead, not stuck in the back of your throat.

At the bottom of your range, start by singing a note on an 'mmm' sound then open your mouth to an “ahhhh” sound. “mmmmmmm-aaaahhhhhh”. Keep the same feeling of resonance in your head for both the 'mmm' and the open 'ahhh' sounds.

How to soften your voice

1. Breathe from your diaphragm to control your voice

To make your tone of voice friendlier, you have to be aware of how fast you talk and how high or low your voice gets. Use strong breaths from your abdomen for better control.

2. Vary your vocal pitch. Don’t speak in a monotone voice

Vary your voice. Speak high and low as you talk, stressing important words in your sentence with a higher pitch reassures listeners, while lower pitches can induce calmness into your conversation.

3. Speak slowly to keep people engaged

When you speak too quickly, you sound like you just want your conversation to be over. Instead, speak slowly to allow your listener to hear every word you say.

4. Use a softer voice to avoid sounding aggressive

Keep your voice at a level that allows people to hear you without shouting at them and coming off as aggressive.

5. Avoid mumbling to keep your listener from getting confused

Speak clearly, articulating every syllable of each word.

6. Record yourself to practise your changes

Use your smartphone or a camera to take a voice recording or video of you while you speak. Pay close attention to the pitch, speed, and loudness of your voice. Make improvements after each new recording.
