Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has weighed in on the Jose Mourinho saga by suggesting the players needed to take some responsibility as well.

Having made the worst start to a Premier league campaign in 29 years, the pressure was all on Mourinho with reports that he was going to be sacked regardless of the result against Newcastle United flooding social media.

The Red Devils fought from two goals down to win against the Magpies 3-2 at Old Trafford in a result which somewhat took the pressure of the Portuguese, but Rooney maintained the players also shared the blame in the club’s low tide early in the season.

"I know Jose is getting a load of stick but I said a few weeks ago, the players have to stand up," He said.

The Manchester United board recently came forward to say they fully backed Mourinho despite the torrid start to the season.

Mourinho, on his part, has claimed there is a witch-hunt for him especially from the media, who seem to find error in most of his tactics.

Rooney, told the Telegraph that it was down to the players to show the manager they could

"The manager can do so much but then it is down to the players on the pitch to produce and probably collectively," he went on.

In many respects, United have not been the same since the departure of the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson who left in 2013 at the back of another title-winning season.

His successors, David Moyes and Louis Van Gaal, attempted to steady the ship but it proved to be a tall order, even with Wayne Rooney on the side.

Interestingly, Rooney has also had similar sentiments about Dutchman Van Gaal as he refused to throw the blame entirely on the manager.

"Personally I think he set us up brilliantly but we didn't produce on the pitch so I am sure that is getting said behind the scenes."

United currently lie at a lowly eighth in the EPL table after eight matches with a number of crunch matches including a visit to Stamford bridge and two back to back Champions League fixtures against an in-form Juventus after the international break.
