Partisan politics is looked at with suspicion by people from outside. It is believed people enter into active politics only to make money off the public purse.
There is a lot of truth to that assertion. However, there are certain individuals who have proven that politics is not the only means by which to make money.
YEN.com.gh compiles a list of distinguished Ghanaians in the forefront of politics but who made their monies away from public service.
1. Kennedy Agyapong
Kennedy Agyapong has been described as a political maverick. But it may seem that much of his confidence comes from the fact that his money was no gained through the politics of the day.
An independently wealthy investor, Agyapong has interests in construction, agriculture, retail goods and manufacturing.
2. Papa Kwesi Nduom
Some suspect that Papa Kwesi Nduom is the single richest man ever to contest the Ghanaian presidency. And this is not without backing.
Nduom is an investor who owns hotels, factories, media houses, a chain of banks, a university and even a football club.
3. Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah
Kwesi Amoafo-Yeboah was an independent candidate for president in 2008. The business is a private venture capitalist.
He is credited with the introduction of Western Union into Ghana, Sierra Leone and other African countries.
4. Dr Abu Sakara
An agricultural economist by profession, Dr Abu Sakara is reputed to be one of the most accomplished people to ever contest the highest office.
Dr Sakara's profession has seen liaise and work with some of the biggest corporation and inter-governmental bodies in the world.
