A group of students from the Abibifahodie Adesuabea have managed to invent a functioning solar oven with a box.
The solar oven, made by five young kids, was produced from a pizza box and can bake and heat foods.
“The solar oven was basically made from a pizza box” one of the students, Selinam Ampo, told Accra-based Joy FM.
The group said they came up with the idea in a month after their teachers tasked them to come up with an innovation.
The students, aged between 8 and 13, said they had initially wanted to use coal, but opted for solar due to the environmental hazards that the former poses.
“We wanted to do it because we thought that using coal to power things is harmful to the environment,” Selinam remarked.
Listing some of the materials they used to create the solar oven, the intelligent students mentioned heavy-duty foil, thermometer, black construction paper and clear plastic wrap.
“The foil is used to reflect the sun rays into the pizza box, the plastic wrap is for insulation and the black construction paper absorbs the sun’s heat.
“You can bake lots of foods like muffins and biscuit and reheat foods like spaghetti, pizza and many others,” another student explained.
The students indicated that they are already planning of upgrading the solar oven, by introducing a new model which uses battery and can function when there is no sun.
“We would like to make some changes to the oven because there is a slight problem with the insulation and also we would like to have a battery for it so that on rainy days the oven can still be used,” they said.
