Danny Welbeck extended Arsenal’s winning run to 11 matches as the gunners inflicted a rare defeat for Sporting at the Estádio José Alvalade.
Sporting’s home stadium has been a fortress of late as the home side were unbeaten for more than a year.
However, that record would be tested by an Arsenal team in fine form and on a winning run of 10 matches.
In a match that struggled to get going, Nani provided the first real chance on the half hour mark.
After collecting a dreadful pass from Holding, the former Manchester United winger cut inside and unleashed a powerful shot, which fizzed just over the bar.
Prior to that, Arsenal’s best chance fell to Henrik Mkhitaryan, whose free kick was punched away by Renan Ribeiro.

After the restart, Arsenal began the 2nd half the brighter and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was played in by Mkhitaryan.
However, the Gabonese striker’s shot was easily parried by Ribeiro.
In the 67th minute, Danny Welbeck found the back of the net with a well-placed header but the home supporters cheered as it was ruled out for foul play.
Welbeck was played through on goal again as Coates slipped up in the Sporting defence.
This time, the Englishman dispatched the chance clinically with a powerful drive past Ribeiro.
The Gunners received plaudits for their breath-taking play recently but this performance was more about grit and determination.
The win leaves them top of the group – a dark horse in Europe and the English Premier League.
