A motorist driving past normal speed limits ran over and killed Constable Emmanuel Nii Odartey Lamptey, a recently married police officer who was expecting his first child, YEN.com.gh has learnt.
According to a report sighted by YEN.com.gh on Myjoyonline.comConstable Emmanuel Nii Odartey Lamptey and other officers were performing check duties at the Afienya Snap location near Akosombo when the accident happened.
In recounting the incident, eyewitnesses said that at approximately 7:30 PM, a Toyota Land Cruiser, driven by suspect Benjamin Abash, accelerated and knocked down Lamptey.
The crash resulted in Constable Emmanuel Nii Odartey Lamptey's body being dragged underneath the vehicle until the car crashed into a barrier.
The Toyota Land Cruiser then was then thrown into a head-on collision with a Toyota Tundra.
Lamptey sustained life-threatening injuries. He was rushed to Tema General Hospital but died shortly after. Abash was apprehended and detained.
It is however unclear what charges he will face after the death of the police officer.
Yesterday, October 26, 2018, the Director General of Welfare of police, Akuffo Dampare, visited Lamptey’s family to commiserate with them over their loss.
Lamptey leaves behind a wife, who he married six months ago, and a baby girl, who was born days after her father died.
