Prof Obiri Danso asked to leave his position as KNUST VC

The embattled vice-chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has been asked to vacate his position for his assistant to preside in the interim.

Prof Kwesi Obiri Danso has been the target and subject of accusations in the wake of violence on the campus on KNUST in the last two or so weeks.

YEN.com.gh has gathered that students cite him as the reason for their frustration. His position will be taken in an acting capacity by Pro-VC, Prof Rita Akosua Dickson.

The National Council for Tertiary Education (NCTE) has informed the vice-chancellor to make way for the interim governing council to take over the administration of the university.

In the wake of the events of last week especially, students and other influential members of the Ghanaian public have called for the resignation of the VC.

The government responded to the crisis by dissolving the governing council of the school. This did not go down well with the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) branch at KNUST.

The group went ahead to withdraw its services. In solidarity with UTAG-KNUST, the association of administrators in the school also wrote a letter to the government threatening a similar action.

But it would seem like the decision to move the the VC aside is a win for the students and their leadership.

Two leaders, Kelvin Sah and Afiba Harrison, have enjoyed popular support from students and non-students alike with the way in which they have led during the crisis.
