Kofi (Atta) Annan was born on April 8, 1938, in Kumasi, Gold Coast, now Ghana. He was the United Nations (UN) secretary-general for two consecutive five-year terms from 1997 to 2006. He started off as the Budget officer of the World Health Organization in the year 1962 in Geneva. He was a co-recipient of the Nobel Prize for Peace in 2001 with the United Nations.
