Ghana's biggest opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is in December going to elect a number of executives and their flagbearer for the general elections of 2020.
On Saturday, October 27, a number of positions, including that of the national organiser, was filled in elections that were held in Kumasi.
But on their way to the big one in December, the party has for grabs the role of general secretary. Incumbent Johnson Asiedu Nketiah is being challenged by his deputy Koku Anyidoho.
YEN.com.gh has studied the dynamics of the race and has listed four reasons why the man nicknamed General Mosquito should win.
1. Experience cannot be bought
Asiedu Nketiah's biggest point in his favour is the fact of having actual experience. This priceless asset has been forged by a man who has known victory and defeat in the forefront of general elections.
He is the also the longest-serving general secretary of the NDC. That cannot be overlooked.
2. He is actually liked by non-NDC folks
The man divides opinions but Asiedu Nketiah is not a problematic character for many Ghanaians. At least, as things go, many find him more agreeable than Koku Anyidoho.
Unless the NDC believes it can win elections solely by the power of its base, Mosquito should be retained to win over winnable independents.
3. Asiedu Nketiah is a man for both factions
Many NDC sympathisers would deny this but it is clear as day that there are factions in the party.
There are the old guard loyal to former leader J.J. Rawlings and those loyal to the ideals of Mahama and Mills.
The fact that it is hard to place Asiedu Nketiah squarely with either of these blocs mean that he can easily bring both factions together.
4. He is a brilliant strategist
Lastly, the fact that Asiedu Nketiah is probably the best political strategist the NDC has means that Koku Anyidoho may be getting ahead of himself.
General Mosquito knows how to create talking points favourable to the NDC. He knows how to pile pressure and not lose focus.
Would the NDC lose faith in a tried and tested man because of an unpredictable elections of 2016?
