The Holy Spirit is a person. It may sound funny but that's the truth. Let me explain this. Man is a spirit, he has a soul and he lives in a body. When someone dies, the person cannot do anything anymore. he ceases to function on like a normal human being because the spirit of the person, which is the real person, is gone. So the real human being is a spirit. The body is just a container. In the same way, the Holy Spirit is also a spirit and is therefore relate-able, just like the Spirit of man. So if you've been asking "what is the Holy Spirit?", this is a brief explanation to start with. But there's more. Read on.
The truth is the Holy Spirit is the most essential person in the life of a christian. He is the third person of the trinity (Godhead)
- 1 John 1:7 For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one.
This does not make Him any lesser or unimportant than the Father or the Son (the Word). The trinity is One. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of God. They only differ in function. For example, like I mentioned earlier, a man is a spirit, has a soul and lives in a body. This does not make him three-in-one. Niether does it make any of the components of a man any less important. Let’s take a lady for instance. She could be a wife to her husband, a daughter to her mother and a sister to her siblings. All roles are very important. The difference is that, there are different times she will exhibit each of these roles. This does not make her three different people. She is one person with different functions which have different titles. This is the same with the trinity.
The Holy Spirit is a key part of the Godhead and His function is key in believers' lives. God related to man in the Old Testament, Jesus was with man in the New Testament; and now, in our time, we have the Holy Spirit. Jesus, while on earth was limited in the sense that He could not be at different places at the same time. His body made him like any other person. That is why in John 16: 7 He told his disciples, ‘nevertheless I tell you the truth; it is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you’. His departure from the world was advantageous for man. This is because He was going to send the Holy Spirit to His people on earth.
You may ask "who is the Holy Spirit?". The Holy Spirit is a person. He has a personality and needs to be related to. Sometimes, because people have little or no understanding of who He is, they try to fit Him into something they can easily understand or relate with. He is a person; one cannot make him seem like something else in order to understand him. He is not a dove, he is not oil, he is not a handkerchief or a piece of cloth, and He is not water or a feeling. He is The Holy Spirit and he is with you right now as you read this. Ready to hear you speak to him.
The work of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer
The Holy Spirit has a role to play in every believer’s life and we get to know of this role from the work of the Holy Spirit Bible verses. A few things the Holy Spirit does and some work of the Holy Spirit will be looked into shortly.
Everything the Holy Spirit does is what Jesus did while He was on the earth. In John 14: 16, Jesus said "And I will pray the Father, and He shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you forever." The phrase, ’another comforter’, in this verse is ‘allos Parakletos’, in the original greek language, which means, ‘another of the same kind’. It is, therefore, safe and true to say that the Holy Spirit is Jesus in another form; a form that can reside in man and work in and through him.
If the Holy Spirit is described as another Comforter in John 14:16, who then is a Comforter? The Amplified version of this scripture gives a clear understanding of what a Comforter is.
John 14: 16 as given in the Amplified version of the Bible is "And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby), to be with you forever."
The Holy Spirit is the believer's Helper, Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor, Counsellor, Strengthener and Standby.
He is there to help, assist and aid to make things easier and possible for you. You are never without help. Just ask and you will receive help. He is the greatest helper.
He gives you the pleasant feeling of being relaxed and free from pain. He takes away all pain and worry and gives you His joy. He is always there to comfort you. In any and every situation.
He supports and promotes you. He stands in on your behalf to back and to protect you. He is your number one fan! With Him, you can only go upward and forward.
He intervenes for you and represents, arbitrates, negotiates and moderates on your behalf. You can never lose when He stands in the gap for you. He makes you victorious and keeps you victorious.
He is the extraordinary strategist who will show you what to do and when to do it and who will be with you all the way. He is your sure guide in and on every issue.
He is the one to give you the strength and energy you require. The Bible says in Ephesians 3:16 that we are strengthened with might by His Spirit in our inner man. With the Holy Spirit as your strengthener, you will be able to do so much and not get weary or faint.
He is always ready and willing. He loves you so much. He is there for you all the time. He said in Hebrews 13:5 that He will never leave you, neither will He forsake you.
Many people ask about how to pray in the Spirit because praying in the Spirit is a spiritual activity, thus it cannot be comprehended with the natural mind. 1 Corinthians 14 teaches extensively on praying in the Spirit.
One major way of praying in the Spirit is by speaking in tongues.
Verse 2 of the chapter states that when you speak in tongues, you speak mysteries unto God. Romans 8:26-17, “Likewise the Spirit also helps our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And He that searches the hearts and knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because he makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. When you speak in the language of the spirit, you do not understand what you are saying but know that you pray according to the will of God." The Amplified version of 1 Corinthians 14:14 says that "when we pray in tongues, the Holy Spirit by our Spirit prays." In essence, the Holy Spirit prays on our behalf when we speak in tongues. You can never go wrong when you speak in tongues. The One who knows all things prays through you.
- Speaking in tongues helps you to magnify God well.
On the day of Pentecost, The Holy Spirit met the Christians for the first time and enabled them to glorify God in many different languages or tongues and they were heard and understood by people who came from various parts of the world. Acts 10:46, “…For they heard them speak in tongues and magnify God…”.
- Speaking in tongues keeps you edified.
Paul, the apostle said in 1 Corinthians 14: 18, ” I thank my God, I speak in tongues more than you all” because he saw great things happen in his life and he was kept in the will of God. 1 Corinthians 14: 39 instructs believers ; “…and forbid not to speak with tongues.” Do not cease to speak in tongues. You are built up and edified and remain in God's perfect will the more you speak in tongues. 1 Corinthians 14: 4.
The work of the Holy Spirit in the church
In the church, when the Spirit moves, he does so to bring salvation, healing, liberation and conviction. His main business is the gathering of souls and he does this with reaper angles, as believers pray. The Holy Spirit is the Lord of the harvest. This means that he is mainly concerned with bringing souls into the body of Christ and helping these souls grow. If you evangelize to someone, unless the Holy Spirit convicts the person, the person will not believe.
The Holy Spirit is ever ready to come into your life and make it beautiful. The work of the holy spirit is very essential and cannot be overemphasized. If you are a believer, He is already inside you, all you need to do is acknowledge his presence and He will take it from there. However, if you haven't accepted Jesus, you will not be able to enjoy the benefits the Holy Spirit brings into a person's life. Accept Jesus today and you will experience true joy and freedom like you've never seen before.
