Prayer is a great act of faith. Prayer is talking to God; the Lover of your soul, your Father, your Friend, your Creator, the one who knows and loves you. Sometimes, we have difficulty praying because we do not know what to say in our prayer and we do not know whom we are praying to. No matter how big your desire is, the communication lines of your prayer will seem like a dark and lonely path with no direction.
You need to know the One you are communicating with who loves you very much and actually wants to have a beautiful relationship with you. He is ready to listen to all you have to say and to share thoughts and ideas with you.

What is praying in the spirit
Praying is the spirit, also known as praying in tongues, is speaking to God in a language that is not of this earth. That is to say, a language divinely inspired by the Holy Spirit and is understood only by God Himself.
1 Corinthians 14:2 (KJV)
"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries."
Romans 8:26-27 (ESV)
"Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God."
The power of the Holy Spirit
Jesus promised us the Holy Spirit. He said that He would come and teach us all things. The Holy Spirit gives power and grace to those whom He is with. They are able to make the difficult look extremely easy. They are the ones we refer to as the "anointed ones."
Prayer in the Holy Spirit
The best way to relate with God must be in the spirit. Praying effectively must be done in the spirit. Praying in the spirit is not as spooky as it sounds. Another way of saying "prayer in the spirit" is "prayer in the Holy Spirit".
"God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4: 24
Hebrews 12:9 tells us "God is the Father of spirits."
Praying in the Holy Spirit or in the spirit builds you up spiritually. “But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit”. Jude 1: 20
Prayer must always be done in the spirit. When you do so, not only do you get on the same page with God, you become more conscious of Him and less conscious of yourself. You are also refreshed when you pray in the spirit.
Holy Spirit and prayer
The Holy Spirit tells us what we need to pray about. "Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." Romans 8:26-27
One excellent way to pray in the spirit is by speaking in tongues. You are energized and refreshed and the Holy Spirit prays through you. You can call this Holy Spirit Prayers.
For with stammering lips and another tongue He will speak to this people, to whom He said, “This is the rest with which You may cause the weary to rest, “And, “This is the refreshing”; Yet they would not hear. You enter into God’s rest when you speak in tongues and you are physically refreshed.
1 Corinthians 14: 14 (Amplified) "for if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unproductive [because it does not understand what my spirit is praying]."
Romans 8 (Amplified)
26. In the same way the Spirit [comes to us and] helps us in our weakness. We do not know what prayer to offer or how to offer it as we should, but the Spirit Himself [knows our need and at the right time] intercedes on our behalf with sighs and groaning too deep for words.
27. And He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because the Spirit intercedes [before God] on behalf of God’s people in accordance with God’s will. As seen in the scriptures, the Holy Spirit prays for us in words (groaning) which cannot be uttered. He prays and makes intercession on your behalf. Simply put, when you pray in the spirit, the Holy Spirit takes over and prays for you according to the will of God.
Feeling the Holy Spirit while praying
Prayer is not a difficult task. When a person desires to prays, they may sometimes run out of things to say, at some point. That is why the Holy Spirit is needed for this. As you commune with the Holy Spirit and feel Him everytime, you begin to experience the following:
1. You begin to pray effortlessly
2. You pray longer. Sometimes for hours
Holy Spirit prayers
One can pray on a number of topics in the spirit such as
- Seeing the lost being saved
- Advancement of the work of God
- Praying for one's nation and those in authority
Praying for the Holy Spirit to come
Praying in the spirit, like a lot of things in life, needs to be learnt and perfected over a period of time; be it long or short. The pointers below will guide you on how effectively you can pray in the spirit.
1. Acknowledging and asking the Holy Spirit for help
The Holy Spirit is given to every believer to go with them through life, teaching and leading them in the right direction. Who can better show you how to pray in the spirit than the Holy Spirit Himself?
"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things…”John 14: 26
All you need to do is ask. Just say a short prayer to the Holy Spirit, asking Him to teach you how to pray in the spirit. The results will shock you!
After all, as Philippians 2: 13 says, “for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.”
2. Practicing the presence of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit is a person. Talk to Him, minister to him. "The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all Amen." 2 Corinthians 13: 14
The Holy Spirit is interested in fellowshipping and communing with you. He wants to be your closest friend. In that way, you can constantly be in the spirit. You can practise his presence through listening to good Christian music, reading, praying and through other everyday activities.
3. Pray according to the Word of God
"It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life." John 6:63
The word of God is spirit and life. It has inherent power to cause changes in your life and in your environment.
Short prayer to the Holy Spirit
Lord Jesus, you promised us the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in the last days. I ask you today to pour out your spirit upon me. Holy Spirit, come and dwell in me. Fill me up. May your presence be felt in my life and in all I do. I pray for the baptism of the Spirit and may I walk the rest of my days in you, Holy Spirit. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen
Praying in the spirit is not at all complicated. Prayer is communication, hence the Holy Spirit and prayer go hand-in-hand. Speak in tongues often. It is the language of the Spirit, fellowship with the Holy Spirit for inspiration and pray according to what the word of God says. "For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries." 1 Corinthians 14:2 (KJV). This is the simple formula to praying in the spirit.
