Asamoah Gyan breaks silence: 'I am annulling my marriage not divorcing'

Black Stars captain, Asamoah Gyan, has finally broken his silence on reports that he is divorcing his wife.

Gyan and his wife, Gifty, have been dominating news headlines in the past week after reports surfaced that the footballer had filed for a divorce.

The report also had it that Gyan had questioned the paternity of their kids and had asked for a DNA test on all of their three children.

But in a statement released on Friday, November 2, Asamoah Gyan has denied the divorce reports.

Admitting that his marriage was in trouble, the Black Stars captain clarified that he is not petitioning for divorce but an annulment.

“Our client has noted the level of misinformation as well as the veiled and sometimes open attempt to discredit him, his family and or his friends and therefore we write for and on behalf of Mr Asamoah Gyan on matters that have come to his attention because they have been largely publicised and talked about within the media space across the country,” a statement signed by his lawyer Mr Edwin Kusi Appiah which YEN.com.gh sighted on Graphic Online read.

He thus cautioned media outlets and members of the public against the misinformation being peddled about his marriage with a strong warning to those who would flout his directive.

“Much as our clients has no interest in discussing his marriage in public, he will hold any person, media or otherwise, to strict account on any or all things that are published about him or his children which are untrue or unpalatable.”

“For all those sections of the media and faceless outlets that have begun some sort of vendetta against our client and his ilk, please consider this letter as one, before action. If you feel inclined to test our clients resolve, then prepare yourself to do as much in the court of law,” he stated.

YEN.com.gh checks after Gyan's statement indicate that though divorce and annulment may be quite similar as they all bring an end to a marriage, the latter further erases the record of the marriage that it was sought against.

To put it simply, this will mean that, in Asamoah Gyan's case, his marriage to Gifty never existed.
