- Luka Modric leads the race to win this year's Ballon d'Or award according to early reports
- The Real Madrid superstar won the UEFA and FIFA the Best Award this year after winning silver at Russia 2018 World Cup
- While Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are said to be missing in the top three spots for the prize
Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi are set to miss out of this year's Ballon d'or award according to reports by Give Me Sport.
Both stars have been at the top of their games - dominating the award since 2009 and winning the prestigious award five times each.
However, the status quo is about to change as Ronaldo and Messi set to miss out of the top three spots for the prize.
The duo have already missed out of two important awards this year with World Cup finalist Luka Modric winning the UEFA and the FIFA best player awards .
According to French radio journalist Eric Mamruth, neither Ronaldo nor Messi is in the race to win sixth title as they are not in the top three spots for the contention.
The journalist further stated that the Real Madrid star, who has endured a struggling start to this season in all competition leads the race for the award.
While Paris Saint Germain forward Kylain Mbappe and Raphael Varane in the second and third positions as of the moment.
Although, the vote counting process is not concluded yet, the results are said to be astounding with the both Messia and Ronaldo missing in action.
But after they both crashed out of the World Cup at the last-16 stage, there’s a belief that neither actually deserve to win the award for a sixth time.
Meanwhile, legends like Thierry Henry believe a Frenchman deserves to win the award after winning their second World Cup in Russia earlier this year.
"I think it would be a shame if a French player does not win the Ballon d'Or, apart from Eden Hazard because he was extraordinary at every Wold Cup match - defensively and on the counter-attack," Henry said.
"But logically, a French player should win. Why not Varane? He won the Champions League, he was very strong.
"There is the alien (extra-terrestrial) Kylian Mbappe, and also Antoine Griezmann. But I can also mention many players."
The Croatia international defeated Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah and Juventus superstar Cristiano Ronaldo to win the award in London on Monday night.
Modric's performance at the 2018 FIFA World Cup helped him win the award as he captained his national team to the final of the championship where they lost to France.
