The biography of Mavis Hawa Koomson states that she was born on the 3rd of February, 1966, in a small town in Northern region of Ghana. Her hometown is known as Salaga.

During her teaching days, she exhibited her leadership skills when she occupied the position of head teacher in one of the schools she taught in. She also exhibited her leadership skills by becoming the president of the Gender Unit of the Ghana National Association of Teachers Ladies Associations. In this organization, she also served as treasurer and secretary on separate occasions and regions.

During the naming of the cabinet by President Nana Akufo-Addo, in May 2017, Mavis was made one of the ministers that were to form the cabinet. This was a major achievement in her political journey as she became part of the most valued members of the government who were supposed to help and spearhead all the major decision making processes.

She was among the nineteen ministers who were named that day. The President named Mavis Hawa Koomson minister of Special Development Initiative.
