Government will not increase presidential staffers to 1614 - MP

- The MP for Sekondi, Andrew Mercer, has stated that the government does not intend to increase the number of presidential staffers

- There are currently 998 workers at the Jubilee House

- He explained that the minister of finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, has merely provided for only 1614 people in the 2019 budget

The Member of Parliament (MP) for the Sekondi constituency, Andrew Egyapa Mercer, has stated that the government will not increase its presidential staffers from 998 to 1614.

According to him, the 2019 budget has a ceiling of 1614 for such staff, and it is therefore erroneous to think the number will be increased to that level.

“There has been no jump in the numbers. The 1,614 is only a ceiling that has been provided for in the budget.

What that means is that owing to some request that the presidency had made in the discussion with the finance ministry, approval has been given for up to that number to be recruited.

So we don’t have that number. It could get there or it may not get there. The information I have is that the 998 will not change,” he told host of The Big Issue, Selorm Adonoo on Saturday, November 24, 2018.

Rumours of a possible increase in the number became popular after the MP for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, raised it in parliament.

Ablakwa argued that the planned move smacks of insensitivity on the part of the government, especially as many Ghanaians continue to lament over difficult economic times.

The President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe, also criticized the government over the matter, saying the planned increment was a waste of money.

Mercer however indicated that such comments were mischievous as, they didn’t reflect the reality on the ground.

He further indicated that the budgetary allocation to the office of government machinery had been reduced from GHS 119 million in 2018 to $110 million in 2019.
