In recent times the Ghana Police Service (GPS) has come under a lot criticisms from the general public for improper conduct in their line of duty as well as exhibition of unprofessional behavior.
This has caused some of these personnel who are found culpable to loose their jobs and others to be interdicted pending investigations
YEN.com.gh has identified seven instances some personnel from the Ghana police service have come under serious public scrutiny.
1. Shooting of seven suspected armed robbers at Asawaase Zongo:
YEN.com.gh earlier reported a case of some 21 police officers who gunned down seven people suspected to be armed robbers. Investigations revealed that he they were not armed robbers as purported by the police
2. Sexual misconduct:
Some 14 police personnel who were on peacekeeping mission in South Sudan were accused of sexual misconduct against women whom they were supposed to protect. 14 of these officers have been interdicted and being investigated
3. Abuse on journalists or reporters:
A study conducted by the media foundation for west Africa indicates about 17 journaist who have been abused by the police in their line of duty. These is quite disturbing despite the noise being made concerning press freedom.
4. Midland incident:
YEN.com.gh reported a police man wielding a gun who abused a woman in an attempt to turm her away from the bank after several days of trying to have access to her savings.
5. Unwarranted attacks on individual:
A police personnel in an attempt to get a driver to pay a GHC0.50p toll shot at the vehicle but unfortunately ended up injuring a woman who was also aboard the same vehicle.
6. Stray bullets:
Through the actions of the police to maintain law and other they end up injuring people with bullets which were not actually intended to hurt anyone. This act alone has made the police service a very unpopular institution.
The police service has been touted by the public as a very corrupt institution despite efforts to rid the government of corruption. However, the these same people who complain are the same to go giving the police money to be forgiven for offenses committed
