My help comes from the Lord - sermon, song, lyrics and meaning

Like the Psalmist, we must get to a level in our walk with God where we would be able to confidently say that "My help comes from the Lord". However, confessing this can only be possible when we have finally shut the door against every other thing striving for our attention and absolutely focus on God. By implication, we have chosen not to run to man for help or assistance. All we just do is gaze on God and wait on Him until He answers our petitions as well as grant the desires of our heart.

"My help comes from the Lord" meaning

Psalm 121 is a Psalm of degree wherein the author expresses his confidence in God. It explains the importance of leaning on God and putting one's total trust in Him as being able to do all things and meet all of our needs. When we learn to see God as the all-sufficient, then it makes it easy for us to repose our trust in Him. So, when the verse says "My help comes from the Lord", it means that we must not rely on creatures or mere mortals as our source of help. This is because of the limited ability of man.

However, please note that when the author, David, said, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills", he was not saying that he would trust in the strength of the hills, princes or great people who are highly positioned. He was only speaking figuratively that he would lift his eyes to God who is seated in the heavenly places. David understood that God alone is the present help in times of need. So, when he said his help would come from God, he was saying that all his expectations are in the power and goodness, and grace and providence of God because only He is able to grant the petitions of his heart.

Although, God knows the help that you need at every point in time, yet He is always expecting you to ask Him. While He would not come down to help, you must understand that He knows the best source from where He could send the help you the need. Just as He sent the prophet Elijah to the Cherith Brook and also commanded the ravens to take food to him on a daily basis, God knows whom to send to you to give you the help that you need at every point in time. So, while your concern should never be how He would do it, all that is expected from you is to keep looking up to Him.

Psalm 121:1-8

We all need help in life. At every stage of our lives, there is usually one help or the other that we will demand. In fact, it has been found out in life that no one gets to the top without, at least, a help or assistance from someone. But then, come to think of it, when the need to ask for a help arises, who do you turn to? Do you start knocking on doors or simply cry to help to come to your aid? In this passage of the Scripture, King David teaches us a very vital principle that can unlock the door of help at any point in time. It is the principle of absolute dependence on God.

King David is a man who was known for his unwavering love for God. He had always been so passionate about God so that right from his childhood, he had learned to trust Him for everything he needed. For instance, while he was in the wilderness, he had the consciousness of God. Then, all through the time when king Saul was after his life to kill him, he held on to his God. He didn't allow the prevailing circumstance at that time to block his view of God or disconnect him from serving God. In fact, by the time he eventually ascended the throne, he was already grounded in Him; he had developed a beautiful relationship with Him.

My help comes from the Lord

When he said he would lift up his eyes to the hill and from there (God) will his help come from, he knew that there are other options he could have gone for. However, from experience, he also understood that those help do not last for long. Little wonder he mentioned it in Psalm 60:11 that "vain is the help of man". There is a limit to the help you will enjoy from man and this is because we are all created with limited abilities. Only God is unlimited. Consequently, the best that man can do for you is to help you to the best of their capacity. They cannot go beyond it, no matter how much they desire to.

More so, when they help you, they can revoke it at any time or make boast in it that they are the source of what you enjoy. To make matters worst, when you offend them, they look for a way to punish you because you are at their beckon. But God is never like that. The good news is that when He helps you, no man can question Him. As He does what pleases Him, He can choose to place you at a level where no devil will be able to bring you down. His help supersedes all other forms of help.

If you look into that passage very well, when God helps you, the following are some of the things that you will enjoy:

  1. He will not allow you to be shaken or allow anything to move you (verse 3). He is constantly committed to your safety. This is one of the reasons why He does not sleep even when you are;
  2. He will not permit the sun of wickedness to scourge you nor their evil plans to come to pass in your life (verse 6). No matter how much they try, they will always fail because the greater One is with you;
  3. You will enjoy preservation. This means that no matter the evils that happen around you such as sicknesses, pains, disappointment and so on, you will be divinely protected against them all (verse 7). You may hear them with your ears but you will never experience them as others do;
  4. Your going out and your coming will be with high-level security. By implication, God will see to it that you don't experience any hurt. You know what? Angels are constantly assigned to ensure your safety at all times. Wherever you go, they go with you so that no arrows of the wicked will find their way into you.

However, you must bear in mind that if you would ever enjoy this help that comes from God, the first thing you have to do is to believe that He exists and is capable of helping you (Hebrew 11:6). Then you must practice the principle of absolute trust in Him. This is because God does not want anyone to make Him their alternative. Once He sees your sincerity and He knows that you absolutely rely upon Him without looking elsewhere for any assistance, then it is easy for Him to come to your aid quickly whenever you call unto Him.

Below is the lyrics for "My help comes from the Lord" song that was sung by The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir. It explains further the point being discussed so far and it has its way of inspiring you to always lean on God and look up to Him for every assistance that you need always.

"My help comes from the Lord" song

When you remember the song "My help comes from the Lord", what should rightly come to your mind is the unlimited ability of God to do all things and work all things out for the good of His children. The song is a source of courage to anyone in distress or who needs a help to always look up to God. You see, while there can be other sources of help, what makes the help that comes from God different is that it is the only help that you can rely on at any time without being fearful.

Apart from the fact that the song encourages everyone to trust in God's ability to send help at all times, it also highlights some of the blessings that are received in the process. For instance, part of the lines in the lyrics of the song says "he (God) shall preserve thy soul even for ever more". That is interesting. While man may help you to a level and withdraw, the song emphasises that God will preserve your soul forever. It shows how committed God is to you, isn't it? He is not committed for a season but forever.

When we see the results produced in the lives of people, it is easy to determine whether we will follow the steps they took or stay on our own. Based on his experience, in his walk with God, it was easy for David to come to the conclusion that "My help comes from the Lord". And just as he did and it paid him off, God is also looking for persons like you and me who would shut off their eyes to other sources and make Him their only focus. He wants you to come to the point where you are determined that if He (God) does not send the help that you need to you, you are not willing to look up to man.
