The Ghana Police Service has been ranked as the eighth best police force in Africa.
This is according to a report released by Business Insider SSA, which assessed the police force of all 54 countries on the continent.
The report took a critical look at the capacity, legitimacy and outcomes of their work when it comes to internal security.
The Ghana Police Service emerged as one of the best 10 police forces in Africa, ahead of South Africa and Morocco, who placed 9th and 10th respectively.
Meanwhile, West African neighbours Nigeria were ranked as having the worst police service on the continent.
The report placed the oil-producing country 1st on the list of worst police force in Africa.
It was established that they had the worst internal security in terms of capacity, legitimacy and outcome.
The ratings will no doubt come as a surprise to many Ghanaians, who have often criticised the works of the country’s police.
The Service has on countless occasions been accused of engaging brutalities without justified cause.
In 2018 alone, there have been several cases recorded where Police officers openly brutalised citizens, with last month’s protests at Adenta a perfect case in point.
Also, the Ghana Police has often complained over the lack of resources and equipment that would help them to fight crime in the country, with government assuring to provide them with the needed logistics.
However, it appears these factors have had little dent on the ratings, which considered internal security in terms of capacity, legitimacy and outcome.
