- Nine aspirants eyeing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer position have petitioned the party’s Council of Elders over high filing fees
- In the petition, the nine aspirants proposed that fees for collection of forms be GHS 5,000 whiles the filing fees be GHS100,000
Nine flagbearer aspirants of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) have petitioned the party’s Council of Elders over the ‘hefty’ filing fees being requested from aspirants.
The nine are Alban Bagbin, Ekwow Spio-Garbrah, Joshua Alabi, Sylvester Mensah, Stephen Atubiga, Nurideen Iddrissu, Goosie Tanoh, Kojo Nonsu and Elikplim Agbemava.
They maintain that the GHc400,000 being charged as filing fees for flagbearer aspirants is unreasonable and should not be made to stand.
They, therefore, proposed that fees for collection of forms be GHc 5,000 (instead of 20,000) whiles the filing fees be reduced to GHc100,000.
The nine aspirants also want the polling date shifted back to the first week of March 2019.
The NDC will go to the polls in January 2019 to elect its presidential candidate for the 2020 general election.
However, the party has been widely criticised for charging hefty filing fees from aspirants, especially those contesting the flagbearer position.
Following a meeting by the NDC’s National Executive Committee (NEC) on Thursday, it was agreed that all male flagbearer aspirants will pay GHc400,000 as filing fee.
Female flagbearer aspirants are also expected to pay GHc200,000, while the amount is pegged at GHc150,000 for persons with disability aspiring to the same position.
Meanwhile, the nomination form for the NDC flagbearer slot is going for GHS20,000.
For parliamentary aspirants, males are expected to pay GHS20,000 as filing fees, while female aspirants will pay half the amount.
All aspirants have subsequently been given 10 days to officially and properly file their nominations.
The total GHc420,000 being requested from flagbearer aspirants has not enthused many people, with the camps of some aspirants lamenting the situation.
Meanwhile, the General Secretary of the NDC, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, maintains that the fees are moderate.
