Chinese authorities are cracking down on 'extravagant and wasteful' weddings

Chinese authorities are currently on a mission to end extravagant weddings in the Asian country.

According to them, increasingly extravagant wedding cultures are against “socialist core values”.

It has become common for Chinese weddings to be held in elaborate fashion by the bride and groom.

For thousands of years, weddings in the Asian country had a particular pattern, which is to be expensive.

However, that is set to change now, with officials maintaining that modern ceremonies have gotten out of control.

Authorities say competition between couples has prompted ever-more lavish celebrations, expensive gifts and extreme rituals for “hazing” the bride and groom.

Some of the practices during weddings have also been described as leading to a decline in morality.

For instance, the tradition of hazing, originally seen as a way to drive away evil spirits, has grown particularly extreme in recent years, with grooms, brides and bridesmaids subjected to sometimes violent pranks.

The South China Morning Post reported in November that a man was hospitalized after being hit by a car as he tried to escape his friends’ hazing ritual.

It is also reported that some families have taken advantage of the extravagant weddings to set high “bride prices”.

The Guardian reports that bride prices have gone as high as $30,000 in some local communities in China.

To this end, the Ministry of Civil Affairs has set out to end extravagant weddings in the country.

The Ministry says it wants to create a “simple and appropriate marriage etiquette” that advocates “diligence and thrift, and opposes extravagance and waste.”

“We must integrate socialist core values into the construction of marriage and family. So that marriage customs can better reflect the country’s values,” a statement from the Ministry read.

The Chinese government therefore intends to set guidelines on the process of weddings and the amount of cash gifts.
