The Central Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Allotey Jacobs, has said that he disagrees with former president Jerry John Rawlings concerning the GHC 420,000 filing fees to be paid by NDC presidential aspirants.
This comes in the wake of NDC’s ‘outrageous’ filing fees saga where some presidential aspirants were calling for a reduction in the GHC 420,000.
Former president, J. J. Rawlings, who doubles as the founding father of Ghana’s largest opposition party, the NDC, has said that the amount was too huge thus should be reconsidered and subsequently reduced.
However, Mr. Allotey Jacbos, speaking as guest on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 edition of Badwam Show on Adom TV expressed his dissatisfaction with the stance taken by the founder of their party.
“I disagree with Rawlings that the fees should be reduced because if we gather the amount of money we will need for the flag-bearer race, even if they all pay, the total amount will not be enough,” he said.
Just after the NDC’s National Delegates Congress, the general secretary of the party, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketia announced that the filing fees for the presidential aspirant position was a whooping GHC 420,000.
This announcement did not go down well with some NDC presidential aspirants as well as some party members thus they complained bitterly about the amount, deeming it too expensive.
The likes of Dr. Ekow Spio-Gabrah, Sylvester Mensah, Alban Bagbin among others complained about the fee except former President John Dramani Mahama.
Not long after the filing fee was announced, about 97 NDC Members of Parliament together with over 100 members of the NDC party opted to contribute and pay the GHC 420,000 for ex-President John Dramani Mahama who was an aspirant for the flagbearership position of NDC towards the 2020 elections.
News trickling in has confirmed that 4 of the presidential aspirants have been able to pay the filing fee of GHC 420,000 as of today.
However, the 2nd Deputy Speaker of Parliament and 7-time Member of Parliament for Nadowli West Constituency; Mr. Alban Bagbin is still bitterly complaining about the filing fees.
He claimed that the national executive committee of the party were being bias towards those who could not afford the fee.
Meanwhile on Tuesday, December 4, 2018, Mr. Allotey Jacobs noted on Badwam Show on Adom TV that considering the NDC’s penniless situation at the moment, it was justifiable to charge GHC 420,000 as filing fees since the amount would be used to finance the party towards the 2020 elections.
