- The NDC has reduced the filing fee for its presidential primary by GHC100,000
- The party has also postponed the primary by one week
- The decision was taken after a meeting by the party's elders following a petition from some aspirants
The leadership of National Democratic Congress has reportedly rescinded its decision to charge aspirants in their upcoming presidential primary GHC400,000 as filing fee.
According to reports, the amount has been reduced by GH¢100,000. The price for the nomination form which was pegged at GHC20,000, however, remains unchanged.
This means aspirants would have to pay GHC320,000 to contest the presidential primary which will elect the party's flagbearer for the 2020 elections.
A report YEN.com.gh sighted on Mynewsgh.com indicated that party has also extended the date for the sale of nomination forms to Saturday December 8, 2018.
The presidential primaries itself has been moved from the originally announced date to January 26, 2019.
The decision to reduce the filing fee comes after the party's elders had a meeting over a petition it had received from some aspirants concerning the fees.
Eight of the aspirants led by second deputy speaker of parliament, Alban Bagbin, petitioned the elders over what they described a very high filing fee.
They had suggested that GHC100,000 be taken as filing fees and also asked that national chairman and general secretary be made to step aside.
It is not yet clear what led the party's elders to come to the conclusion and what they said about the group's other concerns.
Meanwhile, former president John Mahama, the overwhelming favourite for the primary has been honoured with a doctorate degree by the Lyon Business School.
The latest honorary degree becomes the fourth Mahama has received.
