The TIN, Medical Drone and other initiatives that came from Mahamudu Bawumia

Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia was cast by the New Patriotc Party (NPP) prior to the 2016 general elections as an affable, energetic and intelligent force. This seemed to have worked because the NPP won the elections quite comfortably.

The expectations then began from the people. Bawumia's knowledge and expertise was now sought to be put to work.

Looking back from the end of 2018, we can say that although the NPP has been under immense pressure to deliver on promises, the advertised expertise of Bawumia has showed in one or two aspects of the economy.

YEN.com.gh lists five innovations the government has marketed as coming from Mahamudu Bawumia.

1. Ghana National Single Window Programme

This 2017 initiative by the government is an all-of-government automation and integration approach to link government agencies and private sector operators involved in international trade.

The vice-president is credited as having led government's Economic Management Team to propose this to cabinet.

2. Mobile Money Interoperability

Mobile Money Interoperability that sees mobile money accounts on different networks transact business among themselves at no cost has been attributed to Bawumia.

The issue raised a lot of brouhaha but currently, it is enjoying patronage from millions of Ghanaians.

3. Digital Address System

Vice-President Bawumia once boasted the digital address system Ghana was instituting was more advanced than that of the US. That might be very far from the truth.

The digital address system is reputed now have more than 250,000 signees.

4. Taxpayer Identification Number

The Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is a policy drive to give individual Ghanaians tax numbers in order to monitor their earnings and taxes paid on them.

This is perhaps the most well received initiative from Bawumia.

5. Medical Drone System

The last on the list is the controversial $12 million medical drone system that plans to deliver medical supplies to people far removed from health centres.

The government promises that initiatives will save lives and cut costs.
