Kennedy Agyapong, Member of Parliament (MP) for Assin Central, has sent what seems like a heartfelt plea to the vice-president and immediate former president of Ghana to find a way to come together for the development of the northern regions.
Agyapong who has won many plaudits especially in 2018 for his criticisms of his own New Patriotic Party (NPP), was speaking on the northern regions on a morning TV show on Friday, December 14.
The lawmaker said that his experience of the people's plight when he went to the Upper West to be enskinned as chief, has forced him to ask fellow politicians to join forces to champion development.
He therefore wants the National Democratic Congress' (NDC) John Mahama and NPP's Mahamudu Bawumia to lead the charge.
Agyapong is referred to by many politics observers as a maverick. He also has the penchant for making fiery comments.
What may be said in his credit is that he has foes both within his party and in the biggest opposition, the NDC.
But on the show on which he begged for the sake of northeners, Agyapong is quoted as saying: "These people don't deserve that. Please, Dr Bawumia and Mahama must come together to change the north…”.
The Upper West, Upper East and Northern regions are among Ghana's poorest. Years of marginalisation and government mismanagement have caused generations to move southwards.
Bawumia and Mahama are currently part of the most powerful politicians in Ghana who hail from the north.
