- Man United are 19 points adrift of league leaders Liverpool after their fifth defeat in the league this term

Manchester United legend Gary Neville expects club boss Jose Mourinho to be fired in the coming days after the Red Devils were battered 3-1 at Liverpool.

According to a UK Sun citing Sky Sports sources, Neville is still unhappy with some of the decisions made by the club's chiefs, including a new deal for Mourinho at the start of the year.

“Will Mourinho leave? I think it'll happen. My preference would always be to get to the end of the season. But the boardroom is so naive it’s unbelievable.

“To give him an extended contract, knowing his cycle of every three years, was incredible. The minute he came back from pre-season he was at it and the club was out of control,” noted Neville, who believes the recent results may be the final straw for the Portuguese tactician at Old Trafford.

"18 months he's 2nd in the league, then you need to keep him hungry.

"His agent was out last week, at press conferences they don't know what he is going to say next, and they don't know what to do with him.

"The problem they will have now is he would cost an absolute fortune to lose him, when you lose a manager in the season you have the situation of who comes in?

"It is not just as easy as saying 'let's get rid of the manager' because Manchester United need a reset and it is not just the manager. It's deeper than that,” Neville added.

Interestingly, United’s loss to Liverpool on Sunday was the fifth in the league this term, but the Portuguese tactician remains upbeat he can still make a top-four finish at the end of the season.

Additional report from SunSport also claim a senior member of the Manchester United side hinted that 90% of the squad members have lost confident in the former Chelsea and Real manager.

Meanwhile, previously had reported that Manchester United were handed a 3-1 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield to maintain their unbeaten status in the Premier League.

Senegal international Sadio Mane opened scoring for the Reds just after 24 minutes of play after receiving a clinical over the shoulder pass from Fabinho.

Jesse Lingard restored parity for the visitors in the 33rd minute after tapping into the net a poor save from Liverpool's goalkeeper Alisson Becker in his own 18-yard box.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp introduced Xherdan Shaqiri for Naby Keita in the 70th minute and just three minutes of coming on, the Swiss restored his side's lead in the 73rd minute.
