The Premier League club broke the news on their website explaining that they have parted ways with the tactician.
United plan to hire an interim manager to take charge of the club until this current season elapses next year May.
In the statement released, they said: "The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future."
"A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager."
The 55-year-old qualified the Red Devils for the UEFA Champions League despite finishing sixth following their Europa League triumph.
Mourinho and United team finished runners-up in the Premier League - 19 points behind winners Manchester City.
This term, although United qualified for the knockout stage of the Champions League, they lie sixth in the Premier League, on 26 points after 17 matches.
