Eden Hazard scored a late goal on Wednesday, December 19, to help Chelsea beat hard-working Bournemouth 1 – 0 to reach the semifinal of the Carabao Cup at Stamford Bridge.
The encounter that took place at Stamford Bridge saw both sides struggle to take the lead as the first stanza ended in a 0-0 draw.
Hazard replaced Ross Barkley after an hour of football and the game was heading to penalties with nine minutes of play left.
But the Belgium playmaker appeared in the penalty area to score with his toe.
Chelsea started the better side as they forced the away team back with series of corners kicks.
However, no serious efforts goal threat was created, not even Willian’s fifth minute strike from the edge of penalty area could beat Arfur Boruc in goal for Bournemouth.
The Blues have another goal scoring opportunity a minute later but
Boruc was spot on to stop Barkley’s strike.
Bournemouth created their own goal threat from a quick counter-attack on 17 minutes though Lys Mousset and Callum Wilson combination that left Chelsea grasping for breath but Wilson shot inches wide of Kepa Arrizalalga’s right side.
Giroud combined well with Willian on 20 minutes but the Frenchman’s left-footer could not beat Boruc.
Willian had a scoring opportunity on 32 minutes off a defence splitting pass from Ruben Loftus-Cheek but for the umpteenth time but Boruc was on hand to save the danger.
At half time there were no changes by both sides.
On the 53 minutes Pedro came on for Willian.
And on 61 minutes.Hazard replaced Barkley
But Bournemouth too the game to Chelsea but could not get a goal.
David Luiz replaced Andreas Christensen on 80 minutes.who left the pitch with a suspected hamstring injury.
three minutes later Chelsea scored off a fine break that saw Hazard, toe-poke a left-footer into the back of the net that needed a slight defection off Charlie Daniels on the way.
Giroud forced a point-blank save from Boruc and despite Bournemouth’s late goal rally, Chelsea held on to seal progress to the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.
