The United States of America through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) have handed over of a 25-seater boat to the Ghana Health Service (GHS)
The united states government funded medical boat is meant to increase access to health services to historically known hard-to-reach island communities in the Volta Region
The medical boat was presented on December 18 2018 by the Ghana Mission Director of USAID Sharon Cromer.
The pontoon boat would improve access to health care for 141 island communities in Kpando, Krachi West and Biakoye districts.
Health care workers would be able to deliver services to island communities and transfer patients to health facilities on the mainland when referrals are required.
The boat would also deliver essential health commodities, support health-related immunization campaigns, and provide disaster relief on the islands.
The USAID Ghana Mission Director, urged community members to be active participants in health services.
She said it was the responsibility of every citizen to be engaged in CHPS services. This she said included the upkeep of the boat and the maintenance of the CHPS compound where they access care.
