N'Golo Kante scored his third goal of the season as Chelsea moved up to 43 points on the Premier League log to close the gap to one point behind third place Man City and two points behind second place Tottenham Hotspur.

The Blues, who are 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool, were hoping to finish 2018 on a high note.

However, they failed to find the back of the net in the first half, despite having a better possession of the ball.

But at the resumption of the second half, Chelsea found the breakthrough in the 51st minute as a beautiful pass from David Luiz found the advancing Kante in the box, who finished calmly past Guaita in goal for Crystal Palace.

The goal was Kante's third of the season, his best return in a Premier League campaign.

Chelsea came close to getting a second in the 70th minute as Willian's fierce shot was pushed into the path of Barkley, whose curling effort was then deflects wide.
