Ghanaians react after gov’t announces free train rides in January 2019

Some Ghanaians have expressed their anger after news of free train rides in January 2019 was announced by the acting managing director of the Ghana Railway Company Limited, John Essel.

As part of the activities lined up to celebrate the 120th anniversary of the company, Essel revealed that there will be free services for rail commuters from January 8 to 19 2019 on the Tema-Accra line.

He added that the company will charge a flat rate of GHC5 per train ride after January 19, 2019.

The acting managing director also took the opportunity to apologize to Ghanaians for the company’s inability to commence the Accra-Nsawam shuttle service before the end of 2018 as planned.

He explained that there was the need for additional work to be done on the Kotoku-Nsawam section of the line to strengthen the structural integrity of the track.

Essel further noted that there was also the need to deal with encroachment and remove unauthorised level crossings.

Hi announcement however didn’t receive the expected reaction from some Ghanaians, who expressed their reservations about the intent:

Timgad wondered why Ghanaians won't hide their shame.

To Yamyeogo, it is simply a waste.

Fosu also wondered we have one train after 120 years.

Jacob also expressed concern about our inability to have 100km railroads after 120 years.

To Edem, the government is simply doing its job.

Opoku believed there is no need to praise the government for this.

To Pobee, we may not be serious as a country.

And Faux-Effah added that Ghana is a failure of a state.
