A flagbearer hopeful of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Sylvester Mensah has criticized the mode of implementation of the free SHS policy by the NPP government.
The former boss of the National Health Insurance Authority was responding to a question posed by a branch executive from Tema Central Constituency at the Hospitality Centre, Tema Community 4.
Starrfmonline.com quotes Mensah as saying: “There are people who even if they’re copying from others during an examination, they copy together with the person’s name. That is exactly what the NPP is doing with the free SHS."
Mr. Mensah was in the Tema Central Constituency to meet with branch and constituency executives, as part of his campaign tour of the Greater Accra region.
In the meeting, Mensah described the education as the "most expensive free item in the country".
He continued: “They haven’t taken into consideration the dynamics involved in our socio-political context before implementing it.
With the so called double track system, parents would even spend more on extra classes for their wards than what we used to have."
The Free SHS policy was initiated in 2017 by the Akufo-Addo-government as a move to ensure consistent and cheaper education.
However, the programme has seen various issues of overcrowding at schools to lack of adequate funding from the central government.
Meanwhile, the NDC flagbearer primaries will be held on January 26, 2019.
