Africa’s football governing body CAF have named Egypt as the new hosts for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament slated to commence in the summer.
According to a statement via CAF’s official Twitter handle on Tuesday, January 8, Egypt will now replace Cameroon as the new hosts for the 24-nation tournament.
After relieving the central African nation from playing host to the biennial football fiesta, Egypt and South Africa tabled bids to step in as host.
CAF, who were expected to make the decision regarding the new host on Wednesday, January 9, surprisingly, had a change of heart and named the north African nation host on Tuesday.
Interestingly, football followers in South Africa were undivided to support their country’s bid to play host to the continent’s football showpiece, with the South African Football Association (SAFA) not handed the financial from government which reports suggest made it tough for CAF to take their bid serious.
Earlier, YEN.com.gh reported that Confederation of African Football (CAF) have stripped Cameroon of the hosting rights of the 2019 African Cup of Nations billed for next summer.
The executive of the football governing body met in an extra-ordinary meeting on Friday, November 30 in Accra to arrive at this decision.
