It has been revealed that eating chocolates is a better way to cure cough as compared to taking a cough syrup.
This is according to Professor Alyn Morice, head of cardiovascular and respiratory studies at the University of Hull and founding member of the International Society for the Study of Cough.
According to him, "chocolate can calm coughs" and is better for respiratory problems than standard medicine.
Prof. Morice maintains that there is enough evidence to prove his research findings.
He, however, adds that medicines containing chocolate could be much more effective to treat cough.
"This proves that a new medicine which contains cocoa is better than a standard linctus,” he wrote for the MailOnline.
The study of 163 people revealed that the patients taking chocolate-based medicine saw significant improvements in two days.
This comes after researchers at Imperial College in London also came to a similar conclusion after their research.
The group found that theobromine, an alkaloid in cocoa, is better at suppressing the urge to cough than codeine - and ingredient often used in cough medicines.
Prof. Morice explains that chocolates contain "demulcent properties" - in other words, it's sticky which means it forms a coating on the throat's nerve endings.

This, he says, is what suppresses the urge to cough.
"This demulcent effect explains why honey and lemon and other sugary syrups can help, but I think there is something more going on with chocolate," he stressed.
