3 reasons why your security is in your own hands

The issue of security has become a national discussion following a series of murder cases recorded around the country in recent times.

It’s been less than a month into 2019, yet a series of high-profile murders are already under investigation by the police.

Ghana is known to be a country that is peaceful, but the recent rates of crime means drastic measures need to be taken by everybody.

Speaking to Accra-based Joy FM on the turnout, a retired Police Director of Operations advised Ghanaians to take their personal security seriously.

Now, here are three reasons why your security is in your own hands:

1.      Be conscious of your environment

Robberies and other crimes always happen, but they can be avoided if one is careful and conscious of his or her environment.

If you have enough information about your environment, you are able to equip yourself and determine your safety.

Murderers and robbers do not announce their operations, but being conscious allows you to be a step ahead of any move they make.

2.      Know how to detect dangerous people

Whenever you are out in public, you must be able to detect abnormalities, and dangerous people especially.

It is often expected that people who hold ill intentions or want to harm you become uncomfortable when they are near you.

If you notice someone putting his hand into his/her pocket, you need to immediately move away and possibly report any suspicions.

3.      Avoid carrying valuables in dark places

Dark places are often the grounds where crimes are perpetrated. To make sure that you are out of danger, avoid such places.

And, especially when you are carrying valuables, it is best to use safe routes that do not expose you to any attacks.

But if you are to use dark routes, then you need to be bold and maintain eye contact to ward off prospective attackers.
