Adult intimate content has been found to be the most popular influence on related behavior among the youth.
This was the outcome of elaborate research by the School of Medical Sciences of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST)..
Dr. Elise Tirza Agyeiwaa Ohene, according to Myjoyonline.com, led a team to determine the adolescent reproductive health needs and sexual behavior and revealed their findings as the world marked Sexually Transmitted Infection day.
An earlier 2014 study by the University of Cape Coast (UCC) found that 97% of Ghanaian youth use adult materials daily, weekly, monthly or once in a while.
The Department of Religion and Human Values (UCC) survey established that 90% of those surveyed can be described as addicted to the materials. In 2011, the University of Ghana undertook a similar survey in Ga Mashie in Greater Accra Region.
The University of Ghana survey concluded that poverty, media, family, friends, and personal choice, and even school and church are major influences on the intimacy behaviours of young people.
The study sampled 150 students in the Ga East District and found 51% children were motivated by adult content. 37% were also found to have been forced into sexual acts, at least, once.
Dr Ohene, in the final analysis, urged the Ministries of Health and Education to make reproductive health information easily available and accessible.
She hoped the the findings of researches would be factored into decision-making on policies towards reproductive health.
