5 reasons why Akufo-Addo should have distanced himself from the Ayawaso West Wuogon elections

The Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-election is scheduled to be held on Thursday, January 31, 2019 to select a Member of Parliament (MP) to replace the late Emmanuel Agyarko Kyeremanteng.

Four people have been officially unveiled by the Electoral Commission (EC) to contest the seat in Parliament.

Several political figures have been involved in a bid to win the seat for the political parties eligible to be represented on the ballot sheet.

President Akufo-Addo has been seen campaigning for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary aspirant, and this may result in a myriad of issues:

1. He is no longer the leader of the NPP but the president of Ghana:

Prior to the 2016 elections, Nana Addo Danquah Akufo-Addo was a flagbearer.

He is now president and should therefore cast himself as the father of the nation, and not one political party.

2. Conflict of interest:

The present administration appointed the current members of the Electoral Commission (EC).

For that reason, it may create the wrong impressions if President Akufo-Addo openly flaunts his preferred candidate in the Ayawaso West Wuogon bye-elections.

3. He should be mourning Agyarko’s death instead of campaigning:

Ghana is a country noted for its cultural values and for that reason, it may have been more appropriate if President Akufo-Addo focused more on mourning the late Kyeremanteng Agyarko instead of campaigning for Lydia Seyram Alhassan.

4. The use of state of state resources in campaigns:

President Akufo-Addo's involvement in the campaign process depicts an implied use of state resources for the NPP.

This stems from the fact that he is the leader of the country, and has control over all resources in Ghana.

5. Possible political repercussions of his action:

President Akufo-Addo's decision to be involved in the campaign may set in motion a chain of events, as successive governments may wish to do same.
