-The EC says all is set for Thursday, January 31, 2019 by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency
- Police have beefed up security and the EC has asked the general public to ignore images circulating on social media purported to be ballot papers for the January 31 by-election for the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency
The Electoral Commission (EC) has denied claims by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) that the voters’ register for the upcoming Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election is bloated.
In a statement, the EC described the NDC’s claims as baseless and unfounded, while calling on the public to disregard them.
“The NDC requested a copy of the said lists [proxy list, transfer list and special voters’ list] late on Friday, the 25th of January 2019, when the activities at the Commission had winded down. It is significant to note that the author of the press release has unlimited access to the Chairman responsible for Operations, and could have reached him without much effort,” sections of the statement reads.
“The Commission finds it surprising, that rather than approaching the Commission to discuss this issue, the NDC chose to go public, accusing the Commission of bloating the register to favour a particular political party. These allegations are baseless and unfounded and we call on the public to disregard them.”
Earlier in the week, the NDC raised concerns about the integrity of the voters’ register for the upcoming by-election at Ayawaso West Wuogon.
The party’s Communications Officer, Sammy Gyamfi, described EC Chairperson Jean Mensah as “a looming disaster which portends danger for free and fair elections in this country and for the democracy of Ghana.”
“As Ghanaians, we should all be worried about what is going on because these things do not help the credibility and integrity of the process. It doesn’t engender the confidence, as stakeholders, we need to have in this process,” he told Accra-based Citi FM.
But responding to this, the EC said the voters’ register for the Ayawaso West Wuogon election is clean, and not bloated as claimed by the NDC.
“We wish to assure the public that the Ayawaso Wuogon register is clean. It reflects the total number of valid voters in the constituency. It is not bloated as claimed by the NDC,” the statement added.
Constituents in Ayawaso West Wuogon will head to the polls on Thursday, January 31 2019 to elect a Member of Parliament following the demise of Emmanuel Kyeremateng Agyarko.
The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) will be represented by Madam Lydia Esinam Alhassan, while the NDC has Delali Kwasi Brempong as its candidate.
Meanwhile, William Dowokpor of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) is also contesting in the by-election.
