Gunshots at Ayawaso West by-election: Eyewitness narrates how violence started at La-Bawaleshie polling station (Video)

An eyewitness has narrated the circumstances that led to the violence which nearly marred the on-going Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.

Barely two hours after the polls opened on Thursday, January 31, 2019 reports emerged on social media with graphic images of some people who had been shot.

The violence which had occurred around the Bawaleshie residence of the NDC's candidate, Delali Kwasi Brempong, ended with many suffering gunshot wounds while two people were even reported dead.

The opposition NDC has blamed vigilante groups belonging to the ruling NPP for the violence and the casualties and subsequently boycotted the elections.

While the NDC alleged that the gunmen shot directly at NDC sympathisers who were readying to cast their ballots at the various polling stations, it is not yet clear how the said thugs started their attack.

A man who happened to be on the scene has narrated what really happened revealing that four people started the whole confusion.

Speaking in a video sighted by YEN.com.gh after the initial incident, the yet-to-be-identified man stated that four men appeared at the La-Bawaleshie Presby polling station with the first one kicking the ballot box away.

The third one, the eyewitness added, also did same leading a police officer stationed at polling station to fire at the four. The third and fourth persons in the gang were hit by the police officer's bullets.

As he approached attackers, the first two bolted and warning shots started flying all over the place before a reinforcement of security personnel arrived on the scene.

According to him, though security personnel had been patrolling the place, only two police officers were around at the time the four people attacked the ballot box.

Meanwhile, the police have arrested seven people in connection with the violence at the polling station.

According to a report YEN.com.gh published earlier, the suspects were identified as Theophilus Sedaku, Amidu Amadu, James Moore, and Samuel Afialo. The rest are Mohammed Latif, Mudamil Munir, and Hudu Fuseini.

The seven, the report explained, had been identified as the main instigators of the violence.
